Artist's Comments

The "Celtic Tree of Life" design expresses the timeless concept of "As above, so below." Celtic knotwork and spirals are tree roots that reach from deep in the earth and grow skyward, up through branches, reaching for the sun and the moon. Knotwork border colors symbolize earth, water, air, and fire. Also, don't miss the dancing faery lights among the tree branches!

Fox, absolutely beautiful! What beautiful knotwork you've done. I love it!

Thank you kindly! This was one of those designs that I drew months and months ago, and then just stuck in a folder and forgot about for a while as it didn't 'grab' me then. Guess it just took a while to mature in my head or something - LOL. (While I was working on this on the computer it also made me wish I had more computing power and a lot more RAM - ahhh, well)

Consider yourself faved :) - for finishing a trees piece. I've got one that I set aside ages ago and haven't ever finished!

Thanks, Bradley! What is it about a tree piece that we've each set them aside at first? Interesting!

Oh, I've been meaning to ask you - have you done your Celtic pieces in a vector-based program? I've been dying to get Illustrator - I've only been working in Photoshop myself, which doesn't necessarily scale well with minute details. Anyway - just curious.

Art O'Murnaghan did an amazing trees page in his illuminated manuscript, so maybe I wasn't feeling up to it.

No, I don't think I've ever done much with vector knotwork. I remember that I did use some 3D knots on columns once, and on three celtic crosses in a piece for a game (thinking that 3D models are more like vector art than they are like painting) but I've pretty much stuck to 2D, unless you count wood carving :).

Ahhh. Wood carving - something I've been thinking about myself lately! A while ago I ran across a website of a man who carved trunks with Celtic knotwork and I was struck. *grin* What kind have you done, if you don't mind me asking?

When I have the space, I've also thought about doing linoleum block prints of knotwork, etc. A little softer to carve than wood - LOL.

Very nice job Kristen, I love the colors.

Thanks! It was fun doing a piece where I could be so colorful, as opposed to 'themed' in a more limited way.

You're welcome Kristen, you did a great job on it.

I used to do relief carving to decorate musical instruments, but, hmm, I don't think I have any of that at my web site. Surface decoration on some harps, and a bunch of peg heads for dulcimers.
